Purpose
The purpose of the Buckeye Rural Electric Cooperative (BREC) Children of Membership Scholarship is to recognize students who exemplify integrity, initiative, and strong commitment to serving their communities. This award reflects the cooperative principles of Concern for Community and Education, Training & Information, honoring young people who demonstrate leadership through action, character, and service- not just academics.
Awards
Five $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. One recipient will advance to the statewide scholarship competition, sponsored by Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives, where they will be eligible to earn additional scholarship funds.
Eligibility
- Must be the son, daughter, or legal ward of a BREC residential member, living on cooperative lines and receiving service at the time of the application.
- Be a graduating high school senior who plans to pursue further education at a college, university or technical school.
- Demonstrate leadership, good character, and community involvement through school, volunteer, or employment activities.
- Applicants who receive a “full-ride” scholarship (covering tuition, room, board, and books) are not eligible.
*To be eligible for the Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives Children of Members Scholarship,
applicants must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
This GPA requirement does not apply to the BREC Children of Members Scholarship
Application Requirements
Applications must be submitted on the official form provided by BREC or by completing the online form below. Completed applications must be returned to the co-op office by February 23, 2026.

- Completed Application Form
- Personal Essay- In 500 words or fewer, describe how you have demonstrated leadership, strong character, or a commitment to serving others in your school, community, or personal life. Explain how these experiences have shaped who you are and your future goals.
- One Letter of Recommendation- From a teacher, coach, employer, community leader who can speak to your character and leadership.
- School transcript - Include a copy of your most recent high school transcript.
- Activities Resume - A list of school, community, and work activities with your role and contributions.
Selection Process
A selection committee will review all applications and conduct interviews with finalists.
Applicants will be evaluated on their demonstrated leadership, character, community
involvement, and overall presentation during the interview.
During the interview, consideration will be given to each applicant’s communication skills,
professionalism, and general knowledge of electric cooperatives.
Winners will be notified as soon as possible following judging. All scholarships must be
claimed within the first academic year after proof of enrollment is received.
